The Best Full Moon Horror Films

It's almost a full moon, our next one will be on August 1st, 2023. Here at the Lunatics Project, we know how powerful the moon can be. We even named ourselves after the original meaning of ‘Lunatic,’ someone who is controlled by the moon.

There's something undeniably eerie about the glow of a full moon, often associated with supernatural occurrences and aggravated emotions. Let’s talk about some of the best horror films that harness the power of the moon.

The Wolf Man peaks out from behind a branch.
Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolf Man from 1941.

The Wolf Man (1941): We have to start with a classic. The Wolf Man portrays the tragic tale of Larry Talbot, cursed to become a werewolf under the influence of the full moon. With its atmospheric cinematography and iconic performance by Lon Chaney Jr., the film established many of the werewolf tropes still used today. Listen to episode 47 of the Lunatics Radio Hour podcast for more about how this film transformed mythology to pop culture.

Our werewolf.
An American in London from 1981.

An American Werewolf in London (1981): An iconic horror-comedy that follows the harrowing transformation of an American tourist into a werewolf during a full moon. The practical effects are notable, especially given the time period. An American Werewolf in London is the perfect combination of dark humor and terror.

Ginger walks down the hallway.
Ginger Snaps from 2000.

Ginger Snaps (2000): Ginger Snaps tells the story of two teenage sisters, as they deal with the unspeakable, being bitten by a werewolf. As the full moon approaches, their lives unravel, exploring themes of transformation, isolation, and the sinister allure of the moonlit night.

Great look at practical effects.
The Howling (1981)

The Howling (1981): This werewolf horror film takes us to a secluded resort where a TV reporter discovers a secret community of werewolves. Honestly, Alan’s dream come true.

The full moon has long been associated with mystery and the supernatural. Many werewolf centric horror films feature iconic transformation scenes. Of course, these have spanned from practical effects to computer generated in more modern years. But I will always have a special place in my heart for the originators of horror effects back in the day. We hope you enjoy the Lunatics deemed best full moon horror films.
