Haunted History: The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel was built in 1926, in Los Angeles, California. Over the years, it’s had several different owners and its design and decor have been overhauled. The building houses 300 hotel rooms, spread across 12 floors. In 2015, the hotel was renovated yet again for a cool $25 million. All of this transformation hasn’t stopped the spirits who allegedly reside here to scare the modern guests during their visit. But before we get into that, let’s talk about Roosevelt's monumental history.

On May 16th 1929 the very first Academy Awards ceremony was held at the Roosevelt. 270 academy members attended the private ceremony. That year Wings won outstanding picture, while Sunrise won most unique and artistic picture.

In 1955, the iconic pool at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel was featured in an episode of the hit sitcom I Love Lucy. The pool and hotel itself have been featured in a long and impressive list of feature films and television series over the years. Perhaps even more impressively, the hotel has housed Hollywood elite including Marilyn Monore (who stayed here for over two years), Clark Gable, Ernest Hemmingway, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Charlie Chaplin and Shirley Temple.

With such a high profile history, it’s no wonder the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel has been dubbed as haunted by guests. Many believe that the hotel is haunted by the famous guests it’s hosted over the years, with alleged sightings of Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn and Montogomary Clift. Guests and staff alike believe that Monroe’s spirit still resides in Suite 1200. An interesting twist is that many hotel guests have reported seeing Monroe in the mirrors of her suite.

Montogomary Clift has been reported to play his trumpet in the hotel, even after death. Some guests have even reported that he’s brushed up against them. He is believed to haunt Room 928, and has also been seen walking the halls outside of his domain. Though on a darker note, several guests have also reported that his spirit has held them down while in bed. Many blogs and outlets also mention the ghost of a young girl, believed to be named Caroline. And is reportedly looking for her lost mother.

Outside of these named entities, hotel guests have reported hundreds of sightings of the years of shadow people, mysterious music and other spooky happenings in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
